Cultivated Colour

My latest show at The Scottish Gallery, Cultivated Colour, opens on 1 October 2026. Over the years the distance between my garden and studio has narrowed, and these paintings follow the year as it unfolds there – from the earliest snowdrops, through tulips in the polytunnel, to agapanthus and dahlias still flowering into autumn. Indoor pelargoniums, many passed on by friends, bring colour and fragrance into the darker months.

Many of the paintings begin with a particular piece from the studio shelves – a mended lustre cup, a blue-and-white platter, a mysterious Victorian bowl – chosen to sit alongside a plant just come into flower.
