Lustre and Line

Lustre and Line

The ceramics that fill my studio have become as vital a starting point for my sketches and watercolours as the flowers that I pick to place within them.

A large, much-cracked Sunderland lustreware bowl has been a cherished possession for so long that it was only natural that this should be the inspiration for my collaboration with Gloria Tyler of Sussex Lustreware. The Seasons bowl draws on a year in my garden and also features my interpretation of The Gardener’s Arms, an image which appears on my old bowl and on several other Sunderland pieces in my collection. My original pen and ink drawings have been translated into transfers, which are applied to the bowls, and also to jugs and mugs, before being embellished with Gloria’s painterly lustre decoration.

This first selection of lustreware jugs, mugs and bowls can be seen alongside my new watercolours in Cultivated Colour at The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, until 24 October 2026.
